What happened at the War of the Golden Stool
The War of the Golden Stool erupted in 1900 in the Ashanti region of present-day Ghana, after the British governor demanded that the Golden Stool, a sacred symbol of Ashanti sovereignty, be handed over for him to sit upon as a display of British authority. This demand was seen as a grave insult, and Yaa Asantewaa, the Queen Mother of Ejisu, rallied Ashanti forces to resist, laying siege to the British garrison holed up in the fort at Kumasi. Reinforcements eventually broke the siege after several months, and the resistance was defeated. The conflict ended Ashanti independence and led to annexation into the British Gold Coast, though Yaa Asantewaa became celebrated as a symbol of resistance to colonial rule.
