The armistice was signed in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiègne between the Allied Powers and Germany, taking effect at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918. It ended more than four years of warfare that had devastated much of Europe, killing millions of soldiers and civilians and destabilizing empires. The agreement required German forces to withdraw from occupied territories, surrender military equipment, and accept Allied occupation of the Rhineland, though it was a ceasefire rather than a formal peace treaty. That treaty, the Treaty of Versailles, followed in 1919. November 11 is still commemorated as Armistice or Remembrance Day in many countries.
