What happened at the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were shot dead on 28 June 1914 while visiting Sarajevo, capital of Austro-Hungarian-controlled Bosnia. The assassin, Gavrilo Princip, belonged to a group of young Bosnian Serb nationalists seeking union with Serbia and independence from Austro-Hungarian rule. The killing triggered a diplomatic crisis: Austria-Hungary, backed by Germany, issued an ultimatum to Serbia, leading to a rapid chain of alliances and mobilizations across Europe.
