Lincoln, having just led the Union through the Civil War, which was ending, was attending a play at Ford's Theatre when Booth entered his box and shot him in the head. Booth escaped but was tracked down and killed twelve days later; several co-conspirators were later tried and executed. Lincoln was the first U.S. president to be assassinated. His death occurred just days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, plunging the nation into mourning even as it celebrated the war's end. Vice President Andrew Johnson succeeded him, inheriting the difficult task of Reconstruction.
