What happened at the Vardar Offensive
The Vardar Offensive began on 15 September 1918 along the Macedonian Front, where Allied forces, including French, Serbian, British, Greek, and Italian troops, attacked Bulgarian and German positions under the overall command of French General Louis Franchet d'Espèrey. The offensive achieved a rapid breakthrough near the Vardar River valley, causing the collapse of Bulgarian defensive lines within days. Facing military disaster and internal unrest, Bulgaria requested an armistice, which was signed on 29 September 1918 at Thessaloniki, removing it from the war. This victory was the first major Allied success leading to the collapse of the Central Powers, opening the way for further advances in the Balkans and hastening the end of World War I.
