Following the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and pressure from settlers seeking Cherokee land, U.S. troops forcibly relocated thousands of Cherokee people from Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in 1838 to 1839. Forced to march roughly 1,000 miles under harsh conditions with inadequate food, shelter, and medical care, several thousand Cherokee died from disease, exposure, and exhaustion during the journey. The removal, part of a broader U.S. policy displacing many Native nations, devastated Cherokee communities and disrupted their society and culture. The Trail of Tears remains one of the most tragic episodes in the history of U.S. relations with Native American peoples.
