The Xinhai Revolution erupted in 1911 when military units in Wuchang mutinied against Qing rule, sparking uprisings across provinces in China. Discontent had grown over the imperial government's weakness, foreign encroachment, failed reforms, and rising nationalist and republican sentiment influenced by figures such as Sun Yat-sen. Provincial assemblies declared independence from Qing authority one after another, and by early 1912 the child emperor Puyi abdicated, ending over two thousand years of imperial rule in China. Sun Yat-sen briefly became provisional president before power passed to Yuan Shikai. The revolution established the Republic of China but left the country politically fragmented for years afterward.
