The RMS Lusitania, a British ocean liner traveling from New York to Liverpool, was struck by a torpedo fired from the German submarine U-20 on 7 May 1915, near the southern coast of Ireland during World War I. The ship sank within about 18 minutes, killing approximately 1,198 of the nearly 1,960 people aboard, including many American citizens. Germany had declared the waters around Britain a war zone and warned of attacks on ships potentially carrying war materials. The sinking caused international outrage, strained German-American relations, and became a significant factor in shifting American public opinion toward eventually entering the war in 1917.
