What happened at the Battle of Trafalgar
The Battle of Trafalgar was fought off the southwestern coast of Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. A British fleet of 27 ships of the line, commanded by Admiral Horatio Nelson, engaged a combined French and Spanish fleet of 33 ships led by Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve. Nelson's unconventional tactic of splitting his fleet into two columns to break the enemy line resulted in a decisive British victory, with no British ships lost while the allied fleet suffered heavy losses. Nelson himself was fatally wounded during the battle and died shortly after learning of the victory. The battle secured British naval dominance for the remainder of the war, preventing any invasion of Britain by sea.
