What happened at the Battle of Adwa
The Battle of Adwa was fought during the First Italo-Ethiopian War, as Italy sought to expand its colonial holdings in East Africa by conquering Ethiopia. Emperor Menelik II, along with Empress Taytu Betul, rallied a large, well-armed Ethiopian force that decisively defeated General Oreste Baratieri's Italian army near the town of Adwa. Thousands of Italian troops were killed, wounded, or captured. The victory forced Italy to recognize Ethiopian sovereignty under the Treaty of Addis Ababa and made Ethiopia one of the few African nations to preserve its independence during the Scramble for Africa, and one of the few to defeat a European colonial power in a major battle, giving the battle lasting symbolic importance for African independence and resistance.
