What happened at the Attack on Pearl Harbor
On the morning of December 7, 1941, aircraft launched from Japanese carriers struck the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, along with nearby airfields. The attack sank or damaged numerous battleships and other vessels, destroyed aircraft on the ground, and killed over 2,300 American servicemen and civilians. Japan intended the strike to cripple U.S. naval power in the Pacific and prevent American interference with its expansion into Southeast Asia. The attack failed to destroy the fleet's aircraft carriers and fuel reserves. The following day, the United States declared war on Japan, formally entering World War II, which soon expanded into a global conflict involving the Axis powers.
