What happened at the Pugachev's Rebellion
Yemelyan Pugachev, a Cossack claiming to be the murdered Tsar Peter III, led a large-scale revolt against Catherine the Great's rule in the Volga and Ural regions. Serfs, Cossacks, and various minority peoples joined him, angered by heavy taxation, forced labor, and serfdom. The rebels captured towns and fortresses, and at its height the uprising threatened Russian control over a wide swath of territory. Government forces eventually crushed the rebellion after prolonged fighting. Pugachev was betrayed by his own followers, captured, and executed in Moscow in 1775. The revolt pushed Catherine to strengthen central authority and tighten control over serfs and local administration in the following years.
