What happened at the Battle of Cajamarca
At Cajamarca in the Peruvian highlands, Francisco Pizarro led roughly 168 Spanish soldiers in an ambush against Atahualpa, ruler of the vast Inca Empire, who arrived with a large but largely unarmed retinue for a diplomatic meeting. The Spanish, using cavalry, firearms, and steel weapons, attacked suddenly, killing thousands of Inca attendants and capturing Atahualpa himself. Despite receiving an enormous ransom in gold and silver, the Spanish later executed Atahualpa in 1533. The battle exposed deep internal divisions within the Inca Empire, recently weakened by civil war and disease, and opened the way for Spanish domination of the Andean region in the following years.
