What happened at the Pueblo Revolt

The Pueblo Revolt began in August 1680 when various Pueblo communities in present-day New Mexico, coordinated in part by the religious leader Popé, rose against Spanish colonial rule. Decades of forced labor, suppression of native religious practices, and harsh treatment by Spanish officials and missionaries had fueled resentment. The uprising killed several hundred Spanish settlers and missionaries and forced the survivors to retreat south to El Paso. Pueblo groups then governed themselves independently for about twelve years. Spanish forces under Diego de Vargas began reconquering the territory in 1692, but full control was not consolidated until 1696 after further campaigns, though later colonial policies showed greater tolerance for Pueblo customs than before.
