The Haitian Revolution began in August 1791 when enslaved Africans in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, in the Caribbean, revolted against brutal plantation slavery. Led over the following years by figures such as Toussaint Louverture and later Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the rebellion evolved into a prolonged struggle against French, British, and Spanish forces. It abolished slavery in the colony and, after defeating a large French expedition sent by Napoleon Bonaparte, culminated in independence declared on January 1, 1804. Haiti became the first nation founded by formerly enslaved people and the second independent state in the Americas after the United States, profoundly influencing debates over slavery and colonialism worldwide.
