In 1588, King Philip II of Spain dispatched a large fleet, known as the Spanish Armada, to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I of England, restore Catholicism, and support a planned invasion by Spanish forces in the Netherlands. The Armada sailed up the English Channel but was harried by faster English ships under commanders such as Sir Francis Drake and Lord Howard of Effingham. A fireship attack scattered the Spanish fleet near Calais, and subsequent battles, combined with severe storms as the ships attempted to return to Spain around the British Isles, destroyed much of the fleet. The failed invasion boosted English national confidence and marked a shift in naval power.
