The Union of Kalmar was formalized in 1397 at Kalmar, Sweden, bringing Denmark, Norway, and Sweden together under one monarchy. Eric of Pomerania was crowned king of all three realms, but Margaret I of Denmark, who had engineered the alliance through years of diplomacy and marriage politics, continued to hold actual authority as regent until her death in 1412. The union aimed to strengthen the Nordic kingdoms against German influence, especially from the Hanseatic League, and to secure stable succession across the three crowns. Tensions over Danish dominance and unequal treatment of Swedish nobles eventually weakened the arrangement, which finally broke apart when Sweden withdrew in 1523.
