After King Henry I of England died in 1135 without a surviving legitimate son, the succession was disputed between his nephew Stephen of Blois, who seized the throne, and his daughter Empress Matilda, whom Henry had named heir. Their supporters clashed across England and Normandy in a prolonged, destructive civil war marked by shifting alliances, sieges, and widespread disorder, later called "the Anarchy" for its breakdown of royal authority. Neither side achieved decisive victory for years. The conflict effectively ended in 1153 with the Treaty of Wallingford (also known as the Treaty of Winchester), under which Stephen remained king but recognized Matilda's son, Henry, as his heir, leading to the Angevin dynasty's rise in 1154.
