Johannes Gutenberg, a German goldsmith and printer, developed a system of movable metal type and an adapted press that allowed texts to be reproduced far faster than by hand-copying. In Mainz, around 1454-1455, he and his workshop produced the Gutenberg Bible, a Latin edition of the Vulgate text, in a print run of roughly 180 copies on paper and vellum. This innovation combined type casting, oil-based ink, and a screw press to enable mass duplication of written works. The technology spread rapidly across Europe in subsequent decades, lowering the cost of books, expanding literacy, and transforming the spread of religious, scientific, and political ideas in the centuries that followed.
