Long before the unified structure known today, individual kingdoms in ancient China built rammed-earth walls and fortifications to defend against rival states and northern nomadic raiders. States such as Qi, Chu, and Yan constructed sections during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, starting roughly in the 7th century BCE. These early walls were localized, made mostly of packed earth and stone, and served specific regional defense needs rather than a single national purpose. Centuries later, after unifying China in 221 BCE, Emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered many of these separate walls connected and extended, laying groundwork for the vast fortification system that later dynasties, especially the Ming, would rebuild and reinforce into the Great Wall recognized today.
