What happened at the Battle of Actium

The Battle of Actium was a naval engagement fought near the Ambracian Gulf on the western coast of Greece. Octavian's fleet, commanded by Marcus Agrippa, faced the larger but less agile ships of Antony and Cleopatra, queen of Egypt. Antony's forces suffered from low morale and disease, and many ships were unable to break through the blockade. When Cleopatra's squadron withdrew, Antony followed, abandoning much of his fleet. The defeat left Octavian as the dominant power in Rome. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt, where both died the following year. Their deaths ended the Roman Republic's civil wars and paved the way for Octavian's rise as Emperor Augustus.
