The Battle of Salamis was fought in the straits between the island of Salamis and the Greek mainland during the second Persian invasion of Greece. The Persian king Xerxes I had already sacked an evacuated Athens, but his large fleet was lured into the narrow waters, where its numbers became a disadvantage. The Athenian statesman Themistocles devised the strategy that made the victory possible, though the allied Greek fleet was nominally commanded by the Spartan admiral Eurybiades, reflecting Sparta's formal leadership of the alliance. The Greeks destroyed or scattered much of the Persian navy, forcing Xerxes to retreat and shifting the war's momentum toward the eventual Greek triumph the following year.
