Two planes struck the World Trade Center towers in New York City, causing both to collapse; a third hit the Pentagon near Washington, D.C.; and a fourth, United Flight 93, crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers resisted the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people were killed, including hundreds of firefighters and police officers. The attacks, orchestrated by Osama bin Laden, prompted the United States to launch a global 'War on Terror,' including the invasion of Afghanistan, and led to major changes in national security, airport safety, and international relations.
